Conference : South Asian Economic Integration - A Strategic and Economic Appraisal

11 June 2013 | Taj Samudra, Colombo, Sri Lanka

RCSS, in partnership with the Regional Programme SAARC of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), hosted a conference on South Asian Economic Integration on the 11th and 12th of June 2013 at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.

In September 2011, ahead of the SAARC summit in the Maldives in November, India pushed for “progressive economic integration” of South Asia and underlined the need for expanding intra-regional trade and investment. Keeping up with the momentum, the Indian National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon reiterated the need for enhanced economic cooperation and integration in South Asia. Against this background, it was thought timely to undertake a study though a consultative process to assess the economic and strategic opportunities and challenges this economic integration offers to the region.
