Description
This book attempts to enhance the reader’s understanding of political institutions and their roles in Bangladesh and India. It consists of nine chapters, each discussing the interplay and links between political institutions and issues of governance, institution building, and security as they strive to become coherent. The volume seeks to address three critical questions: the tangible roles the political institutions have played in strengthening the conflict prevention frameworks at all levels; reasons for political leadership not sufficiently addressing intra-party reform agendas; and the possible future roles of political institutions may play in conflict prevention and in democratizing society.

From theories of grand strategy to critical constructivist interpretations, a whole range of approaches to this question are included.

Description
Environment, Development and Human Security have been major concerns for the entire world and South Asia is no exception. Today, the term ‘security’ has expanded beyond issues of geo-polity, international power balance, military strategy and statecraft. Instead at present, non-traditional security issues make a great impact on the global arena. In this context, greater attention is paid to the connection between environment and security. This collection seeks to study how the link between environment and security manifests itself in South Asian context as well as how this manifestation fits into, or negates, the thrust of the existing literature.

Description
This particular volume is the outcome of a preliminary exercise linking two very tangible phenomena of our contemporary existence: Globalization and non-traditional security, in the context of South Asia. Globalization affects countries and societies differentially depending on a wide array of factors including stages of development, motivations of state and sub state actors. So, how has South Asia been affected by globalization? Which are the sectors and social groups in South Asian countries on which globalization is impacting? What has been the impact of globalization on growth, equity and poverty in the South Asian countries? These questions transform the globalization discourse into the domain of what we call non-traditional security. Thus, this volume attempts to answer the above mentioned questions and understand the impact of these growing non- traditional security issues on South Asia.

Description
The security has an extended meaning beyond its obvious military connotations is increasingly being understood in South Asia.; there is a better appreciation now of its non-military and human dimensions. Hence, the state needs to cater for its own security and, simultaneously, the security of its individuals which has acquired equal, if not greater significance with the passing years. Hence, the imperative necessity arises to provide for good governance to achieve the ends of both state and individual security. The theoretical problem discussed in this book is discovering the nexus between security and governance in South Asia.

Description
In the new millennium, there is a growing realization that the concept of security can no longer be confined to the narrow landscape of the military-strategic concerns of the state. The focus is increasingly shifting to ‘human security’, which centers on ordinary people and their security needs. In South Asia, the expanded people-Centric conception of security is gradually finding a voice. This volume draws attention to the diverse facets of security from the standpoint of the average South Asian man, woman and child. It explores vital security issues relating to economic well-being, ethnic identity, religion, gender and political legitimacy.

Description
What in today’s world constitutes national security? What is it that is most important for a nation to protect and for which it needs to evolve strategies? Are state borders and frontiers the most crucial and therefore ought to be defended against all forms of external aggression and influence and at all costs? Or, are there other issues or core values, or matters that directly affect the interests of the citizens and concern their personal security in a more immediate manner, the protection of which can often brook or delay? There are no clear answers to these questions yet or perhaps even in the near future. However, in the coming decades, these issues will emerge as major questions facing South Asia. This book is a small step in developing a better understanding of the issues.

Description
Ethnic issues are at the roots of many of the vexing problems and conflicts between and within nations today. In many cases ethnicity political assertion transforms into secessionist movement defying political and constitutional response. The upsurge of ethno-political strife that often has cross-border implications is also a major source of threat to national, regional international security. This whole issue highlights the importance of constitutional reform in preventing and resolving ethnic conflict. The linkage between ethnicity and constitutional reform is of ceaseless academic and policy interest, particularly in the context of South Asia where very few other factors are more dominant in national and regional spheres. This book probes into the problem of ethnicity in South Asia and examines if and to what extent constitutional reform is a way out.

Description
The end of the Cold war has induced fresh thinking on approaches to security. The focus is on non-conventional aspects, particularly economic strength, interest and interdependence of nations. As distinct from the notion of security mainly focused on military power, the idea is to consider a more expanded agenda. The book examines the scope and policy implications of such rethinking in South Asia. The volume focuses on the political and economic trends in the region at a time of sweeping transformations in global politics, economic and security and the linkage of “regional economic trends” with South Asian security.

Description
Issues related to nuclear non-proliferation in South Asia arising from the nuclear programs and ambitions of India and Pakistan have long been the subject of emotive policy debate and intense scholarly research. Both Islamabad and New Delhi acknowledge that they have the capability to build nuclear weapons and the need to retain the ‘nuclear option’; at the same time, they also deny actually done so. The complexities arising out of such ambiguities are compounded by the fact that neither India nor Pakistan have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Apart from the contributions made by some of the leading experts in both India and Pakistan on this subject, it also contains contributions on this issue by scholars from Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Description
Regional relations in South Asia have always been affected by the movements of people across territorial boundaries of the states. Rapidly growing dimensions of refugee flows during the past decades have seriously affected security and stability of both the refugee generating as well as receiving states. This is one of the first studies of how refugee flows have vitiated security environment in South Asia at the national, bilateral and regional levels. The security implications of refugee flows have been studied in the cases of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Tibetan refugees, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi (Chakmas) refugees in India and Bhutanese refugees in Nepal.
