An international seminar and discussion on “Global Conflict Management: Preventative Diplomacy and Resolution” was held at the Center for Strategic Studies, Bangsaen, Chonburi, Thailand from he 3rd – 6th July 2016. The Center for Strategic Studies, Royal Thai Armed Forces was established in Honor of His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary, in Bangsaen District, Chonburi Province, Thailand.

http://asean.org/The seminar was an opportunity for all leading academics or Think Tanks from many countries to present their perspectives and to have fruitful discussions on essential matters regarding managing conflicts and preventing violence or wars. The participants included Think Tanks, defence organizations, governments, academics, military, and others from ASEAN and ASEAN-Plus countries. RCSS was one of the only two organizations represented from outside of the ASEAN.

On July 5 th , 2016, Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, the Executive Director of RCSS, also delivered a lecture at the Think Tank Summit in Bangkok. His lecture, titled “Managing Global Terrorism: Beyond Statist Approaches”, touched on how contemporary terrorism has helped to actualize dystopian realities that authors like George Orwell and Haruki Murakami capture in their post-apocalyptic novels. Understanding terrorism through this context, Professor Imtiaz suggested ways in which terrorism can be more effectively understood and combatted.

One of the key contributions made during the seminar by RCSS, was the pitch of an idea for an ASEAN virtual university. This will be taken up in the future.
